The Dumaguete and Dauin area, in the Philippines' Negros Oriental province, is regarded as one of the world's most important macro diving destinations. The rich marine life that thrives on its volcanic black sand seabed, in particular, has made the region a unique hub for underwater photographers and divers wanting to observe small marine creatures. Dauin is considered one of the best places to experience "muck diving", a style of diving well known in the international diving community.

One of Negros's greatest strengths is the way it combines different styles of diving in one place. Alongside the black-sand macro dive sites close to shore, Apo Island — around a 30–40 minute boat ride away — stands out as one of the Philippines' most successful marine protected areas, with healthy hard coral reefs, wall dives and a dense fish population. The Dauin area is regarded as one of the world's most important muck diving destinations. Thanks to its volcanic black sand seabed, it is home to many small marine creatures that are very difficult to see elsewhere.
