Madagascar split from the African continent a hundred and sixty million years ago, and as a result of that separation it is home, on land and in the water alike, to species found nowhere else. Diving is mostly done around Nosy Be in the northwest; coral reefs, channels and sandy flats all fit within short boat distances. Water temperature is between 26 and 29 degrees.
Two things set the calendar. Cyclone season runs from January to March, and the sea is unreliable in those months; the dry season lasts from April until November, and that is the settled period for diving. Humpback whales pass through the island's waters between July and September, while whale sharks feed off Nosy Be between September and December. These encounters depend on the season and cannot be guaranteed.
Madagascar's appeal is not limited to what is underwater: baobab trees, lemurs and the island's cooking turn the non-diving days into a trip in their own right. Our tour in this region is planned for June, in the middle of the dry season, and includes a total of ten dives over five days.
