Kenya is one of the few countries where you can fit diving and safari into the same trip. The coastal side — Mombasa, Diani, Watamu — looks out onto the coral reefs of the Indian Ocean; water temperature is between 26 and 29 degrees and the reefs are supported by protected marine parks.
The rains set the calendar. The long rains fall between April and June, and many dive centres close in that period; the short rains come in November. The most settled period for diving is from October to March, and the months with the best visibility are January to March. Whale sharks can also be seen offshore in the same window, between January and March. The calendar on land works differently: the great migration is between July and October, while February, being the calving season, is the period when predator activity is high.
Our programme in this region brings the two together: dives on the coast, then a safari day inland. The choice of February is no accident — it falls in the month when visibility on the coast is at its best and the calving season is under way on the savannah.
