The heart of the Coral Triangle. Covering Indonesia, the Philippines and their neighbours, this triangle holds more than three quarters of the world's coral species and over six thousand species of fish; no other sea area on the planet comes close to that density.
What the region shares is current. The flow of water between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific is forced through the narrow channels between the islands, and the nutrients it carries feed both the coral and the big animals. That also sets the character of the diving: in places such as Komodo and the Maldives you need to be comfortable in current, while in places such as Bali and Moalboal the entry threshold is low.
There is no single "best season", because there is no single climate. The monsoon calendar changes from island to island; Komodo's dry season falls in different months from Thailand's, and in the Maldives a season means "different" rather than "good or bad". Each destination's own calendar is written out separately on the region pages below.
Distance keeps the programmes in this region long: flights are either connecting or direct routes of more than ten hours, tours usually run between seven and ten days, and most of them add culture days alongside the diving.
