Diver training is a ladder: each step opens a depth and a privilege, and becomes the prerequisite for the next. The courses on this page are organised according to the RAID system and their theory is completed online — so that pool and sea time is left for practice.

The order of the ladder works like this. Open Water 20 is the first certification and gives you the right to dive to twenty metres with a buddy, without an instructor. Explorer 30 and Advanced 35 carry that limit first to thirty and then to thirty-five metres, and add the planning, gas management and navigation side of deeper diving. Master Rescue Diver moves the diver on from their own safety to someone else's: recognising a problem, responding and rescuing. Divemaster is the first step of the professional ladder — managing a group, giving briefings and assisting an instructor.

Nitrox sits outside this ladder and can be taken at any step. Using enriched air extends bottom time on trips with repetitive dives; considering that liveaboard programmes involve four dives a day, it is one of the certifications that pays for itself fastest.
